Mattes will always have a place in our hearts, but when they're combined with metallics? Now that's a recipe for a new trend in the makeup world!
On a recent trip to CVS, I couldn't help but notice how many new displays I saw containing these trendy matte metallics or even just pure metallic lipsticks. Maybelline, L'Oreal, Revlon, you name it. I noticed the different shades ranging from delicate pink lusters to the more adventurous and bold greens, blues, and dark plums.
At this point, they got me. I just fell in love with the whole idea of this new texture and how glowy the shades appeared on the models. So I decided I had to try it out for myself. Knowing me, I was drawn to all of the rose gold tones that were on display, and picked up the perfect muted, mauvy gold from Milani to dip my feet into the trend.
What I like about this pick in particular from Milani is that it's not heavy like a few other liquid lipsticks I've come across. Upon application, it almost has a light oil-like feel to it that dries into a nice coat of opaque and reflective color.
With that being said, metallic textures in general aren't always the most forgiving when it comes to fine lines or dryness. For example, have you ever put on a metallic nail polish and you suddenly discover ridges and unevenness that you didn't even know your nail beds had? This tricky texture's shininess seems to often reflect and pick up on those little inevitable imperfections. Luckily, after some trial and error, I figured out a couple of ways to get the smoothest application and compiled them for you below!
- Exfoliate: Though it seems like we're constantly hearing it over and over again, exfoliating is an essential step in ensuring a smooth canvas to layer your lip color over. It gets rid of dead skin cells and will eliminate any dryness or flakiness that metallics may highlight. There is no wrong way to do it either; you can use a lip scrub or you can try my favorite fool-proof way of gently buffing away any roughness with a damp and warm washcloth!
- Moisturize before color: Anything lacking proper hydration isn't going to look or feel its healthiest. This goes for hair, nails, skin, and of course your lips! A little extra moisture can go a long way and provide extra life to whatever seems to be in need of boost. Before applying your metallic shade of choice, use your favorite lip balm to regain a soft base and prevent cracks and splits that can form due to dryness. (My pick? Try Milani's Keep It Smooth Luxe Lip Treatment!)
- Apply sparingly by dotting: We often use way more product than we need without even realizing it! Since liquid lipsticks tend to be a bit drying, several layers lying over each other can start to look cakey in appearance. To keep layers light, I like making two dots right under my cupid's bow for my top lip and three dots for my bottom lip. From there, I blend them out. I find that the dotting method gives you a much more controlled distribution of color!
- Finish with a gloss: For further moisture and to make the luster of your metallic lip shine even more, finishing off with a clear gloss really seals the deal!. (*Skip this step if you're using a matte metallic and want to preserve the matte finish!)
